Switches in wet locations and near tubs
Switches in damp or wet locations need a weatherproof enclosure or cover. No switch may be installed inside a tub or shower space unless it is part of a listed tub or shower assembly.
What the code requires
A surface-mounted switch or circuit breaker in a damp or wet location must be in a weatherproof enclosure or cabinet that meets 312.2. A flush-mounted switch or breaker in those locations needs a weatherproof cover.
Switches may not be installed within tub or shower spaces unless they are part of a listed tub or shower assembly.
On the job
- Standard switch plates on exterior walls or patios are a common correction; switches there need weatherproof covers.
- A switch installed within the tub or shower space itself, unless it is part of a listed tub or shower assembly, is another correction.
In California
California's 2025 code adds a rule for OSHPD-regulated health facilities only: no switches within 3 ft of tub or shower perimeters, with exceptions for nurse-call devices. It does not apply to homes or ordinary commercial buildings.
