Garage electrical — openers, lighting & power

The hardest-working room in a South County house.

Garages here do everything — parking, laundry, gym, workshop, storage, and increasingly the household fueling station. Most were wired with a single ceiling bulb and one receptacle, and it shows.

Opener work is a family specialty: Clyde knows garage door motors cold, and the wiring a modern LiftMaster head unit wants — a dedicated circuit, a properly placed ceiling receptacle, and MyQ-ready power — is a straightforward upgrade that saves the extension-cord-to-the-rafters look.

Beyond the opener: LED retrofits that finally light the whole space, workbench circuits that run a saw and a shop vac at once, freezer and fridge receptacles that do not share with the lights, and 240V for compressors, welders and chargers where the panel supports it.

What this covers

  • Dedicated garage-door-opener circuits and ceiling receptacles
  • MyQ-ready wiring for LiftMaster and similar smart openers
  • LED lighting retrofits — bright, even, no shadows at the bench
  • Workbench and tool circuits, 120V and 240V
  • Dedicated freezer/refrigerator receptacles
  • Sub-panels for serious shops
The craft argument. A garage ceiling receptacle on its own circuit costs little and ends the daisy-chain of extension cords feeding the opener, the charger and the beer fridge through one 1978 outlet. Cheap insurance, honestly wired.

Questions people ask

Do you install the opener itself or just the wiring?

Both. Openers are family territory — Clyde has been working on garage door motors for decades. The head unit, the circuit behind it, and the smart-home setup can all be one visit.

Can my garage panel handle a workshop?

Depends what is upstream. A load check says whether the existing service carries the tools you have in mind; if not, a sub-panel in the garage is usually the clean answer and leaves room to grow.

What lighting works best in a garage?

Linkable LED shop lights or wafer LEDs on a switch by the person-door, laid out so the car does not shadow the bench. Motion switching is worth it; a bare bulb on a pull chain is not a plan.
