Bathroom receptacle near the sink

In a home, each bathroom needs at least one receptacle outlet within 3 ft of the outside edge of each sink, on the wall, the countertop or the sink cabinet, never more than 12 in. below the top of the sink or countertop.

What the code requires

In a dwelling bathroom, at least one receptacle outlet must be installed within 3 ft of the outside edge of each sink (basin).

That receptacle may be on a wall or partition next to the sink or sink countertop, on the countertop itself, or on the side or face of the sink cabinet. Wherever it goes, it must sit no lower than 12 in. below the top of the sink or the sink countertop. Receptacle assemblies listed for countertop use may be installed in the countertop.

On the job

  • A receptacle on the face or side of the vanity passes only if it sits no more than 12 in. below the top of the counter.
  • Receptacles are also restricted near tubs and showers under 406.9(C), which can affect where the sink receptacle goes in a small bathroom. Your electrician should check both rules together.
  • The circuit that feeds bathroom receptacles is covered separately in 210.11(C)(3).
