Hydromassage bathtub circuits and GFCI
A hydromassage (jetted) bathtub needs its own individual branch circuit and a readily accessible GFCI. Receptacles of 125 V, 30 A or less within 6 ft of the tub need GFCI protection too.
What the code requires
A hydromassage bathtub, often called a jetted tub, and its electrical components must be on individual branch circuit(s) and protected by a readily accessible GFCI.
All 125-V, single-phase receptacles rated 30 A or less within 6 ft (1.83 m) horizontally of the tub's inside walls also need GFCI protection.
On the job
- The tub must be on its own circuit, not shared with other bathroom loads.
- Your inspector will check that the GFCI protecting the tub is readily accessible.
- Check every receptacle within 6 ft of the tub, measured horizontally from its inside walls.
