Light fixtures in clothes closets
In a clothes closet, incandescent fixtures with open or partly enclosed bulbs, pendants and lampholders are not allowed. Permitted fixtures must stay a set distance from the storage space: 12 in. for surface-mounted enclosed incandescent or LED, and 6 in. for fluorescent and recessed types.
What the code requires
The code does not allow incandescent luminaires with open or partially enclosed lamps in a clothes closet, and it does not allow pendant luminaires or lampholders.
Where a fixture is allowed, 410.16(D) sets a minimum clearance to the nearest point of the closet storage space: 12 in. (300 mm) for a surface-mounted incandescent or LED fixture with a completely enclosed light source, mounted on the wall above the door or on the ceiling; 6 in. (150 mm) for surface-mounted fluorescent in those same spots; and 6 in. for recessed fluorescent, or recessed incandescent or LED with a completely enclosed light source, in the wall or ceiling.
Under 410.16(A), the closet storage space runs from the floor up to 6 ft (1.8 m) or the highest clothes rod and extends 24 in. (600 mm) out from the side and back walls. Above that, up to the ceiling, it extends 12 in. (300 mm) or the shelf width, whichever is greater. Where a rod can be reached from both sides, the space below the highest rod also takes in 12 in. on each side of the rod for its full length.
On the job
- A surface drum fixture with an incandescent or LED source mounted closer than 12 in. to the storage space is a common correction, especially where shelves are deep.
- Problems often come from substituting a different fixture, or moving a shelf after rough-in, which changes the clearance.
- A low-heat LED is not automatically acceptable inside the storage space. Only surface-mounted fluorescent or LED fixtures identified for that use may go inside it.
- Older checklists cite these rules under different letters. In the 2023 NEC the clearances are in 410.16(D).
Exceptions that matter
- Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires identified for use within the storage space may be installed inside it.
What changed in 2023
The 2023 edition moved the closet storage space definition from 410.2 into 410.16(A), so the clearances moved from 410.16(C) to 410.16(D), and the permission for identified fixtures inside the storage space became an exception.
