NEC 314.27(C) · Homes

Ceiling boxes for paddle fans

A ceiling box that alone holds up a fan must be listed and marked for fan support. In habitable rooms of homes where a fan could go, the box must be fan-rated or give direct access to framing that can carry a fan.

What the code requires

A box or box system that is the only support for a paddle fan must be listed and marked by its manufacturer as suitable for that use. Under the 2023 NEC, the marking must be on the inside of the box. Such a box may support a fan of up to 70 lb (32 kg), and boxes designed for fans over 35 lb (16 kg) must be marked with their maximum weight.

In the ceilings of habitable rooms in dwellings, such as bedrooms and living rooms, an outlet box in a spot where a paddle fan could be installed must meet one of two options. Either it is listed for sole support of a paddle fan, or it is installed so there is direct access through the box to framing strong enough to support a fan, without removing the box.

Alternatively, under 422.18, a fan may be supported independently of the box.

On the job

  • A standard light-only or pancake box in the center of a bedroom or living-room ceiling, where a fan is plausible, is a common correction.
  • Building departments differ on which ceiling locations count as places a fan could go, so your inspector makes the call.
  • The fan-support marking must be visible inside the box at the rough-in inspection.
  • Since 2023, under 422.18(B), no metal part of a paddle fan may be inside the zone that extends 3 ft horizontally and 8 ft vertically from the top of a tub rim or shower threshold.

What changed in 2023

The 2023 NEC requires the fan-support marking to be inside the box, and reworded the second option to require direct access through the box to the framing without removing the box.
